1,226,292. Hydrogenation of dicarboxylic acids and anhydrides. MITSUBISHI PETROCHEMICAL CO. Ltd. 22 Jan., 1969 [25 Jan., 1968; 23 May, 1968], No. 3614/69. Heading C2C. Dicarboxylic acids and their anhydrides are hydrogenated to produce cyclic lactones and/or cyclic ethers by continuously introducing a liquid phase starting dicarboxylic acid or its anhydride and gaseous H 2 in excess of the stoichiometric amount into a liquid mixture of unreacted acid or its anhydride, hydrogenated product thereof and suspended hydrogenation catalyst. The mixture is maintained under high pressure to keep it in a liquid phase and at constant temperature sufficient to cause hydrogenation. The products in vaporized form and excess H 2 are simultaneously withdrawn from the system. The proportions of cyclic ether and lactone are controlled by the proportion of water in the system.
