Abstract
1,131,183. Lactones. R. J. REYNOLDS TOBACCO CO. 15 July, 1966 [2 Aug., 1965(3)], No. 32034/66. Heading C2C. [Also in Division A2] Lactones, used for flavouring tobacco products (see Division A2), are made as follows: 4 - hydroxy - 4 - methyl - 5 - hexenoic acid γ- lactone by reacting levulinic acid with vinyl magnesium bromide: 4 - hydroxy - 4 - methyl hexanoic acid γ-lactone by hydrogenation of the previous lactone; #,γ-dimethyl-γ-butyrolactone by reacting #-methyl-levulinic acid with potassium borohydride; α,γ - dimethyl - γ - butyrolactone by reacting α-methyllevulinic acid with potassium borohydride; the γ-lactones of 4-hydroxy hexanoic, 4-hydroxy octanoic and 4-hydroxy nonanoic acids by reacting the corresponding 4-oxoacids with sodium borohydride; 4- hydroxydecanoic acid γ-lactone by reacting noctene-1 with ethyl bromoacetate; 4-hydroxy. dodecanoic acid γ-lactone by the catalytic reduction of 4-ketolauric acid with hydrogen; 4- hydroxytetradecanoic acid γ-lactone by the catalytic reduction of 4-ketomyristic acid with hydrogen; #-methylbutyrolactone by conversion of methallyl chloride to 1 -bromo-3-chloro- 2- methylpropane, reacting this with potassium cyanide to produce 4-chloro-3-methylbutanoic acid, and converting this acid to the lactone; #-isopropylbutyrolactone by converting 2- isopropyl-1, 3-propanediol to 1-bromo-2-isopropytpropanol and reacting this with potassium cyanide; #-ethylbutyrolactone by converting 2- ethyl - 1,3 - propanediol to 1 - bromo - 2 - ethylpropanol and reacting this with potassium cyanide; and α - isopropylbutyrolactone by reacting ethylhydrogenisopropyl succinate with lithium aluminium hydride.
