[Also in Division A5] The invention comprises crystalline citric anhydride of the formula The anhydride is obtainable by treating anhydrous citric acid with 1-2 mols. of acetic acid and 2 mols, of acetic anhydride at a temperature not above 100‹ C., preferably at 35- 50‹ C. An example is given. The product is used with an alkali metal bicarbonate to form an effervescent couple in drug formulations (see Division A5).
