Abstract
1,225,629. Silica mortars. PILKINGTON BROS. Ltd., and A. V. MORSANYI. 15 July, 1968 [11 Aug., 1967], No. 37064/67. Heading C1J. A mortar for silica bricks of glass melting furnaces comprises ground or crushed cristobalite and/or tridymite and has a particle size such that more than 55 weight per cent of the mortar passes a 300 B.S.S. mesh sieve. The mortar can also contain 0À3-1À2 wt. per cent water soluble methyl cellulose, 3% molasses, dextrine, sodium silicate, boric oxide or 2»3% hydrated lime. The cristobalite and/or tridymite used can be made by crushing silica brick which has been fired to 1450‹ C. or by heating quartz to above 870‹ C., e.g. to 1500‹ C. The mortar has a porosity of 20-52% after firing at 1500‹ C.
