Abstract

1,246,663. Glass - melting furnace. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP. 14 May, 1969 [4 May, 1968], No. 21241/68. Heading C1M. [Also in Division F4] A glass furnace comprises submerged horizontal joints between adjacent blocks of refractory material in a coursed wall construction and/ or throat assembly, the joints being sealed by a glass-ceramic formed from a powdered glass that crystallizes on heating. Examples of suitable crystallizable glasses are given. The powdered glass may be mixed with a temporary binder to a suitable consistency before applying to a refractory block in constructing the furnace. On heating the furnace the glass first softens and then crystallizes. Any conventional temporary binder may be used, e.g. a cellulosic material mixed with water.
