Abstract

A machine for stretching leather comprises a frame 14 which is rectangular as seen in plan, having its longer frame members arranged transverse to the direction of leather feed which is shown by the arrow, a set of discs 16 journalled independantly in swivelling forks on each of the transverse frame members, with each disc of one set arranged opposite a disc of the other set to engage the leather between them, one or, preferably, two rollers which may be either cylindrical or, as shown, double frusto-conical, arranged above the sets of discs and adjustable perpendicularly to the frame 14 by screws 23 so as to bear adjustably against the discs and thereby determine the inclination of each pair of discs and hence the amount of initial stretching of the leather, and a pair of exit rollers 6 which are helically formed to produce final stretching of the leather. The discs are caused to bear against the roller or rollers by springs (20) Fig. 2 (not shown) acting in the appropriate rotational direction on the respective swivel mountings. Whereas in the arrangement shown, using double frusto-conical rollers, differing inclinations of the discs is obtained to give greater stretching towards the edges of the leather, replacement of these rollers by cylindrical rollers allows equal or zero inclinations of the discs to be obtained Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown).
