Abstract

1,223,833. Vacuum switches. A. REYROLLE & CO. Ltd. 14 March, 1968 [19 Dec., 1966 (2)], Nos. 56825/66 and 12195/68. Heading H1N. A circuit breaker consists of a plurality of series connected vacuum switch units 13 mounted within an outer evacuated tank 11. The vacuum switches 13 each of which has its own evacuated envelope are mounted in pairs depending from bushings 21 mounted on the top plate 22 of tank 11; the pairs are connected together by a strap 15. Further switches 13 for other phases (Fig. 2) are located alongside the first with metal interphase barriers 20; the six pairs of switches are spaced equally from the axis 14 of the tank. The switches are operated pneumatically or hydraulically by means of a six-armed spider 26 coupled to a mechanism 24 by way of a bellows seal 25. The tank 11 is of stainless steel or epoxy resin, the bushings of epoxy resin and the spider of glass fibre reinforced resin. The pressure within tank 11 is maintained between 10<SP>-2</SP> and 10<SP>-5</SP> torr automatically by rotary and diffusion pumps (not shown). Current transformers 29 surround the bushings 21.
