Abstract

1,223,050. Sectional handles. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 15 July, 1969 [18 Sept., 1968], No. 44403/68. Heading B4K. [Also in Divisions A4 and F2] A releasable coupling for rods and tubes comprises a female member 1, a male member 7 and a split resilient ring 5 engaging in a perimetric groove in the latter. The member 7 together with the ring with its free ends drawn close by means of lugs 6 enters in assembly a cavity 2 in the member 1 but is prevented from being withdrawn since the ring 5 partly springs out to engage a projection former by flange 3 which in its alternative form may comprise a plurality of spaced segments. The members 1, 7 may be of brass or of injection moulded polymeric material and are joined to the ends of tubes or rods to be coupled by riveting, screwing or welding. The ring 5 is preferably made of an acetal copolymer, e.g. " Kematal " (Registered Trade Mark). As shown in Fig. 8, the coupling may be adapted to join two tubes to form a fluid passage, sealing being provided by member 12. A modification (Fig. 9, not shown), uses a sealing ring (14) seated in an annular groove (15) in the male member. The lugs 6 in any embodiment may be so dimensioned as not to project beyond the surface of the coupling. A non-rotatable coupling (Fig. 10, not shown) may be formed by providing an axial lug (17) on the male members to engage the front portion of a slot in the female member. An additional lug and a corresponding slot may be provided diametrically opposite (to 17). Couplings of the invention may be used to join lengths of rod, e.g. ratan cane, or PVC tubes used when laying cables through conduit. They may also be used for joining short lengths of rod to form a handle for a device such as scraping means for use in pipes, or chimney sweeping brushes. In such applications, the coupling may be provided with axial surfaceribs (Fig. 11, not shown) to facilitate easy movement of the coupling in pipes, and to reduce the coupling wear.
