Abstract
1,222,171. Manoeuvring ships. ALGOSHIP INTERNATIONAL Ltd. 15 March, 1968 [6 April, 1967], No. 12675/68. Heading B7V. In a large vessel a fast stopping and manoeuvring system comprises a transverse tunnel 11, a tubular passage 12 on the longitudinal centreline of the vessel having one end open to the tunnel and its other end open to the surrounding water at the bow of the vessel and a vertical axis cycloidal propeller 13 in the tunnel on the longitudinal centreline of the vessel. Port and starboard gates or flaps 20 control the flow of water into and out of the tunnel and valve 18 in the tubular passage is independently operated. The setting of the blades 14 of the cycloidal propeller is adjustable to provide a water-jet thrust to port or to starboard through the tunnel, or forward through the tubular passage.
