Abstract

1,222,110. Mulling foundry sand. JEFFREY GALION MFG. CO. 23 May, 1968 [26 June, 1967], No. 24777/68. Heading B2A. Continuous mulling apparatus for foundry sand comprises a receptacle 11, Fig. 1, with a wall having an inwardly-facing mulling surface 90 and mulling means 42a..h at successive positions along and movable about the axis of the receptacle and means viz. a dam 62, Fig. 2, to interrupt the flow of sand through the apparatus and enhance the mulling action. Deflectors move the sand along the receptacle. Cooling air is supplied via a duct 38. Each mulling assembly includes a wheel 60 with e.g. a rubber tyre 61 and an adjustable dam 62 provided with leading and trailing edge vanes 72, 75. As the dam 62 moves around the axis of the main drive shaft 22 the vanes impel part of the sand downstream in accordance with the angle of the vanes. The mulling gap is vaned by adjustment of an eccentric disc 76. A mulling assembly carries a plough 81 with an adjustable blade 86 and the first assembly 42a includes a further plow 92 to accelerate the sand as it flows from a feed chute 37 into the receptacle 11. The mulling assemblies are arranged successively at different angular positions along the shaft.
