Abstract

Hulls. - A trading vessel adapted for navigation in ice-covered waters has its sides extending upwards vertically from the bilge to the ballast water line and inclining outwardly above this to a point just above the cargo water line, beyond which, up to the bulwarks, they are vertical or slightly inclined inwards. This form enables the ship to raise itself in ice and prevents squeezing; it also gives greater stability and increased cargo capacity.
