Abstract
1,221,414. Disc brakes. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP. 5 Feb., 1968 [6 Feb., 1967], No. 5633/67. Headings F2E and F2F. A vehicle or shaft-breaking system includes a brake block assembly 21, 22 (Figs. 1, 2) and a flexible walled vessel 24 closed to atmosphere and containing pneumatic or hydraulic fluid. Increase of the fluid content of the vessel causes it to distend and effect movement of the assembly 21, 22, e.g. toward a disc 20 to be braked. Two such vessels are linked by a stirrup pipe (not shown) in the Fig. 1 arrangement. A housing 23 of a vessel has divergent walls whereby a non-linear fluid displacement/ mechanical displacement characteristic is achieved, the mechanical displacement of the block assembly decreasing progressively as the volume of the vessel is increased. Leaf springs 25 return the block assembly after operation or alternatively the natural resilience of the vessel may cause withdrawal. The vessel(s). may be of rubber reinforced with nylon. The system is preferably actuated by means including a master cylinder incorporating a similar vessel.
