Abstract
1,221,111. Metallizing non-metallic surfaces, electro-plating. HOOKER CHEMICAL CORP. Jan.24, 1968 [Feb.3, 1967], No.3795/68. Headings C7B and C7F. A non-metallic surface is pre-treated with elemental white or yellow P and a solution of a metal salt or complex of a metal selected from Groups IB, IIB, IVB, VB, VIB, VIIB and VIII of the Periodic Table prior to electroless and/or electrolytic metal coating. Metal phosphite formed in pre-treatment and preferred metals of salt or complex are Cu, Ag, Au, Cr, Mn, Co, Ni, Pd, Ti, Zr, V, Ta, Cd, W, Mo. Treatment with P as melt, vapour or solution may be before or after the treatment with the metal salt solution. Suitable salts are those of mineral acids and organic acids containing 1-18 C atoms. Suitable complexing agents are ammonia, quinoline, amines and pyridine, solution pH 4-14. Substrates treated: plastics with or without filters such as glass-fibrepowder or heads, asbestos, talc, wood flour, carbon, dyes, pigments and waxes; cellulosic and ceramic materials, e.g. cloth, paper, wood, cork, cardboard, clay, porcelain leather, porous glass, asbestos and cement. Substrates may be mouldings, sheets, rods, fibers, films or fabrics. A large selection of plastics is exemplifed. The treated substrates one electroless-plated using any of the metal salts used in the pre-treatment e. g. with Ni from a hypophosphite solution or electrolytically with e.g. Ni from NiCl 2 electrolyte or Cu from electrolyte containing CnSO 4 , H 2 SO 4 and HC1. An electrolytic coating may also be applied to an electroless-coating.
