Abstract

1,250,805. Electroless plating of non- metallic substrates. HOOKER CHEMICAL CORP. Nov.11, 1968 No. 53301/68. Addition to 1,221,111. Heading C7F. A metal free non-metallic substrate is contacted with a low oxidation state phosphorus compound in a solvent and then contacted with a metal salt, the metal being selected from Groups IB, IIB, IVB, VB, VIB, VIIB, and VIII of the periodic table, and subsequently electroless and electrolytically plated with e.g. Ni. The substrate may be cloth, paper, wood, cork, cardboard, clay, porcelain, leather, glass, asbestos, cement or plastics. Many examples of plastics are described which may be filled with glass, carbon, talc, asbestos, wood, flour wax or nylon. The phosphorous compound may be trihydroxymethyl phosphine, phosphorus sesquisulphide, P 4 H 2 , phosphine, diphosphine, hypophosphorous and phosphorous acids and salts thereof or compounds made by reacting phosphorus with nucleophilic agents or organometal compounds. The solvent for the phosphorous compound may cause the surface to swell and a large number of solvents are described. The surface is then contacted with an inorganic or organic salt of Cu, Ag, Au, Cr, Mn, Co, Ni, Pd, Ti, Zr, V, Ta, Cd, W or Mo. A complexing agent may be used and the solution may be aqueous or non-aqueous.
