Abstract

1,251,054. Titanium carbonitride coatings. TEXAS INSTRUMENTS Inc. Nov.13, 1968, No. 53869/68. Headings C7F. [Also in Division C1] An article comprises a substrate of preselected configuration coated with a homogeneous solid solution of titanium carbonitride. The substrate, e.g. C, ferrous metal, Ti, W, Mo, Nb, Ta, or ceramic, is heated in a non-oxidizing environment to at least 600‹C. and then contacted with a gaseous stream containing C, Ti, H and N to form the coating. The gaseous stream may contain H 2 , N 2 , an organic compound and a Ti halide, or H 2 , a Ti halide, and a nitrogencontaining organic compound, e.g. chlorobenzene, diaminethylene, or pyridine. Bulk Ti carbonitride may be produced by subsequent removal of the coating from the substrate.
