Abstract
1,274,947. Carbonitride coatings. TEXAS INSTRUMENTS Inc. July 22, 1969 [Oct. 21, 1968], No.36737/69. Heading C7F. [Also in Division C1] A substrate is coated with a carbonitride of Si, B, or a Group IVB, VB or VIB metal, by contacting it, in the absence of halogen, with a vaporous organic compound containing C, N, and the appropriate element under such conditions that a solid solution carbonitride deposits thereon. Preferably the substrate is heated at least to the decomposition temperature of the organic compound; a carrier gas such as H 2 or N 2 may be used; the substrate may be a ferrous metal, Ti, W, Mo, Nb, Ta, a ceramic or graphite, and preferred organic compounds are (R 2 N) n M where M is the appropriate element, n is a valency thereof, and R is H or C 1 -C 18 hydrocarbon, at least one R being hydrocarbon, specific examples being tetrakis dimethylamino titanium, tetrakis diethylamino titanium, tetrakis dipentylamino titanium, tetrakis dioctylamino titanium and tetrakis diphenylamino titanium.
