Abstract
1,210,776. Coating with aluminium. DOW CHEMICAL CO. Aug.28, 1969 [Oct.7, 1968], No.42980/69. Heading C7F. A substrate of e.g. Fe, Mg, Cu, brass, polymers such as polyolefins, polyamides, and polymeric fluorocarbons, glass, paper, cloth, wood carbon, graphite, or ceramics, is coated with aluminium by decomposing an aluminium hydride in the presence of a catalyst, the decomposition temperature being maintained by contacting with a heated bath of inert liquid, e.g. naphtha, ethylbutylbenzene, ethylbenzene, diphenyl ether, octadecane or xylene. The catalyst may be a compound of a metal of Groups 1Vb or Vb e.g. Zr Cl4, Nb Cl5, VO Cl2, VO Cl3, Ti Cl4 2[(C2 H5)2 O], Ti Cl4, Ti Br4, VCl4, Ti (OC2 H5)2 Cl2, Ti Cl2 (i-oc3 H7)2, Ti Cl2 2[(C2 H5)2 O] or Ti (BH4)3 2[(C2 H5)2 O]. The catalyst may be applied to the substrate first and may be applied in the form of a pattern. The hydride may be Al H3, Al H2 Br, Li Al H4, Na AlH4, Mg (AlH4)2 or AlHnX3-n where X is halogen or -OR or R where R is an alkyl, substituted alkyl, aryl or substituted aryl.
