Abstract

1,220,949. Bending tubes. PINES ENG. CO., Inc. 15 May, 1968 [24 Jan., 1968], No. 23165/68. Heading B3E. A device for bending tubes by thinning an outside portion of a tube to produce a curve comprises a pressure roller 13 rotatably mounted in and projecting radially from one side of a head 11 capable of rotating inside the tube 5, at least two back-up rollers 42 rotatably mounted in said head and projecting radially from the opposite side of said head, said pressure roller and back-up rollers being positioned on the head for bearing against opposite portions of the inner surface of the tube, an eccentric shaft 12 carrying a roller 19 on the eccentric portion 18, roller 19 being in continuous surface contact with roller 13 and operating to successively increase and decrease the distance between the axes of the pressure roller and the back-up rollers during each revolution of the head so as to generate the outer arc of curvature of said tube. The back-up rollers are preferably rearward of the pressure roller and ride the inner surface of the tube before the curved portion. The pressure roller is preferably mounted in a semifloating yoke 24 biased into contact with the eccentric roller 19. The outward and inward movement of the roller 13 is produced by a mutual radial oscillation between shaft 12 and the head 11 as they rotate. This oscillation is produced by means of a roller (34), running on a cam surface (35), which is independently linked to shafts 33 and 52 so that their relative angular position is altered as the roller approaches and moves away from the shafts, Figs. 6 and 7 (not shown).
