[Also in Division B3] In a method of pilger rolling, a blank is fed intermittently between a pair of rolls 5, each roll being continuously rotated in the same direction by a motor, but having a rotary speed which varies periodically during each revolution of the roll. A unit 2 between the motor and a pinion stand 4 converts the uniform speed of rotation of the motor into non-uniform rotation of the rolls. The rolls are arranged to rotate at a slower speed during the intermittent feeding of the blank between the rolls. The unit 2 can take several forms, a pair of elliptical meshing gears 7 and 8 being shown in Fig. 1. Alternatively, the unit incorporates a driving crank 45, Fig. 10, which rotates a forked member 47 by means of a slider 46, the distance between the axes of rotation of the crank and member determining the velocity characteristic of the unit. In a further form, Figs. 6 and 7, the unit includes a hollow driving shaft 28 which drives a coaxial output shaft 43. The shafts are provided with respective cranks 31 and 41 whose outer ends slidably co-operate with a common ring member 35. The ring member is rotatably mounted in a transversely adjustable housing 37. Adjustment of the housing varies the eccentricity of the ring member relative to the shafts, and hence the degree of non-uniform rotation of the rolls. The sliding connection between the cranks and the ring can be replaced by an equivalent arrangement incorporating links (Fig. 5, not shown).
