PlPE-EXPANDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 377,507, dated February 7, 1888.
Application filed October 5, 1887. Serial No. 251,496. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HERRMANN WOJAN, of Brooklyn, Kings county, State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Tube-Expander, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an expander more particularly designed for curved tubes, inasmuch as the mandrel does not advance into the tube as the latter is expanded. The expander may, however, also be used on straight tubes.
The invention consists in the various features of improvement more fully pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a longitudinal central section on line :0 m, Fig. 2, partly in side view. Fig. 2 is a cross-section on line 3 3 Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an end view of the mandrel looking toward the top of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a cross-section on line z .2, Fig. 1; and Fig. 5, a perspective view of the sleeve d.
The letter or represents the inclosing cylindrical shell of the expander, made with a series of slots for the accommodation of three fixed expansion-rollers, b, journaled in shell a, and of a sliding expansion-roller, c,which will be hereinafter more fully described. In order to properly journal the fixed rollers in sleeve a,.the latter should be made sectional, and it is shown,for this purpose, to be made of a separablepiece or ring, a, connected to the shell proper, a, by the screws or.
For the purposes of this invention the parts a a will be spoken of, collectively, as the shell a.
The shell a is provided witha central longitudinal bore or perforation extending from end to end and concentric to the periphery of the shell. This perforation accommodates the eccentric sleeve d. (More fully shown in Fig. 5.) This sleeveis formed of two circularheads, cl, and of a central connecting-piece, d, having the cross-section indicated in Fig. 2-that is to say, the piece 02 is made of graduallyincreasing thickness in cross-section and leaves the central part of sleeve d open at one side. One of the heads d carries a disk, d which covers the shell a, as shown.
The sleeve d is provided with alongitudinal bore from end to end, which is eccentric to the periphery of the sleeve. This bore extends through the heads d and disk d and its periphery is flush with and a continuation of the inner curve of piece (1*. The bore accommodates a central mandrel, e, and is preferably slightly conical, as shown in Fig. 1, so that a conical mandrel may be used. The mandrel is of course partly exposed between the heads cl d. To prevent longitudinal motion of the mandrel c, it is coupled at one end to a ring, f, by cross-pin f, and has at its other end a shoulder, g, as shown. The disk d has a slot, d*, through which extends the shank of a thumb-screw, k, engaging shell a. A pair of 6 eyes, t i, for the reception of a hand-lever are also formed on disk d j is an annular gage-plate for edging the tube to be expanded and is secured to the shell a. V 7a In operating the device a double motion must be gone through-that is to say, the sliding roller 0 must be pushed toward the periphery, and then the expander must be re-- volved to cause an expansion of the tube by 7 such roller. The latter is then again pushed outward and again the expander is revolved. Thus the tube is gradually expanded. In order to carry out this operation the screw it is loosened and a lever or pin is introduced into one of the eyes z. By applying power to this lever the sleeve d is partially revolved. As the sleeve is eccentrically bored, it will crowd the mandrel e out of center, and the mandrel in turn will crowd the roller 0 partially out of shell a and toward the circumference of the tube to be expanded. After the sleeve has been revolved as far as practicableit is clamped to shell or by screw h. The hand-lever is then removed and the mandrel e is revolved by in- 0 troduoing the lever into a transverse perforation of such mandrel. The mandrel will by friction carry the entire expander with it, and
in this way the roller 0 will travel-along the inner circumference of the tube andexpand 5 the same. After the expander has revolved once or twice the roller 0 is moved nearer to the circumference ofthe tube, in the manner described, and the expanderis again revolved. Thus it will be seen that the tube is expanded without causing the mandrel to advance into the same.-
