Abstract
874,523. Angular bending. WILMAN, S. Dec. 30, 1958 [Jan. 4, 1958], No. 42060/58. Class 83 (4). A tube bending machine of the type in which the bending is effected by thinning the outside of the bend by a rolling action applied to the inner wall thereof comprises a wheel-carrying head adapted to rotate inside the tube to be bent, said head comprising a rolling wheel and at least one opposed bearing wheel bearing against the inner surface of the tube at a location substantially opposite to the zone engaged by said rolling wheel. A tube 7 to be bent is fed axially over a rotating rolling head 1 carrying a convexly contoured rolling wheel 2, freely rotatable on an eccentric portion 6 of a pin 4, and two cylindrical bearing wheels 3 opposite the wheel 2 and freely rotatable on pins 5. The pin 4 is oscillated during rotation of the head 1 so that the distance between the rolling wheel 2 and a plane containing the axes of the bearing wheels 3 is at a maximum when the wheel 2 is engaging the inner surface of that part of the tube 7 which forms the outer wall of the bend to thin this wall, and is at a minimum when adjacent the inner surface of the inner wall of the bend so as not to thin this part. The head 1 is rotated by a hollow shaft 69 and the rolling wheel 2 is oscillated during such rotation by gearing 9, 10, or through double universal jointmeans, from a shaft 8, 62 extending through the shaft 69. A crank 63 on the shaft 62 and a crank 68 on the shaft 69 are connected by a link 70 and an adjustable link 65, pivoted to the cranks at 72, 64 and to one another by a pivot pin 71 carrying a follower roll 67 running on a cam track 77 to oscillate the crank 63 and thus the shaft 8, relative to the crank 68 and head 1, thus to rock the pin 4. The cam track 77 is of tapered section and, to vary the curvature of the tube bend, may be moved axially by a handoperated screw 75.
