[Also in Division F2] A flow-down pipe construction for evacuating effluent comprises a main pipe 1 and a branch pipe 8 for admitting at least a portion of the mixture tangentially into the main pipe so that it will flow helically down the pipe 1 as an outer layer surrounding an air column. As shown, effluent from the branch pipe 8 spirals downwardly in a layer adjacent the inner wall of the pipe which is ventilated through a central vortex 10, the gyratory motion of the effluent being maintained by one, or more, oblique ramps 18. The descent of the effluent is braked by a friction surface 5 on an enlarged portion 5 of the pipe 1 and is cut by a ramp 22 the effluent then flowing off normally in a pipe 26 leading to a sliver. At a connection some distance along the length of the main pipe 1 fluid is admitted tangentially into the pipe 1 by means of a connection piece (5), Figs. 4-6, not shown, the effluent from the connection piece (5) spiralling downwardly with that debounded from the main pipe section (1). The connection piece (5) is also provided with secondary inlet orifices (13) and associated baffles (15). Ramps (18), with leading edges (19) for cutting effluent solids, are formed on the inner wall of the main pipe (1).
