Abstract

1346119 Cyclone separator ENVIROTECH CORP 29 Dec 1971 [30 Dec 1970] 60402/71 Heading B2P A cyclone, e.g. for removing dust from a gas, has an approximately tangential fluid inlet conduit 4 which is shaped to generate a flow velocity gradient in the fluid, normal to the direction of flow, such that where the conduit opens into the interior of the cyclone the flow velocity increases across the flow as a function of, and preferably in proportion to, increasing radial distance from the axis of the cyclone. The inlet conduit 4, initially rectangular and of increasing cross-sectional depth in the direction of fluid flow, merges into a flow guide 5 which in turn merges into the cyclone chamber. The outer sidewall 7 of the conduit and guide is initially planar up to the radial plane C from which it curves smoothly inwards to merge with the cyclone body along a line diametrically opposite the line 10 along which the inner sidewall 6 merges with the said body. The top wall 8 is planar and integral with the top of the cyclone body. The bottom wall 9 consists of two sections A and B. Section A is planar and triangular and slopes downwards towards the plane C giving the conduit increasing cross-sectional depth. Section B is initially planar sloping to form obtuse included angles with section A and the outer sidewall 7. At the plane C section B curves round joining the body of the cyclone to the outer sidewall of the flow guide, its shape being a partial conic section.
