Abstract

1,241,537. Hydrocyclone. BIRD MACHINE CO. 13 March, 1970 [29 April, 1969], No. 12159/70. Heading B2P. A vortex-type separator for removing impurities from a fibrous, e.g. waste paper, slurry comprises a tubular body 10 formed of a non- convergent section 12 and a frusto-conical section 14 having an included angle of 6‹- 12‹, the body 10 having a maximum diameter D of 4¢ to 10 inches. A tangential inlet 18 having a rectangular cross-section directs the slurry into the upper end of the section 12 in which is provided a helical scroll 20 for guiding the slurry below the inlet. The inlet has an area equivalent to that of a circle having a diameter in the range of 1 inch to 0.5 D. The combined axial lengths of the sections 12 and 14 is in the range of 5 D to 7.5 D. A vortex finder 22 for removing accepted slurry has an inlet spaced from the bottom of the slurry inlet 18 by a distance in the range of 0.5 D to 1.25 D and from the convergent section 14 by a distance of at least 0.25 D and has an inlet area diameter equivalent in the range of 1.5 inches to 0.75 D. The convergent section 14 has an outlet 16 for a rejected slurry fraction containing the impurities; the outlet has an area equivalent diameter in the range of 1.5 inches to 0.6 D for an included cone angle of 8‹ and above, whereas for an included angle of less than 8‹ the area equivalent diameter is the larger of 1.5 inches and the area equivalent diameter of the outlet of a convergent section of length (6.75 D)-1 inch. A sump 30, having a transparent wall 32, is connected to the outlet 16 via a frusto-conical tube 24, a gate valve 26 and an inlet 28. Water is fed under pressure through a tangential inlet 52 in tube 24 as elutriation liquid and through an inlet 54 in the sump inlet 28 to fill the sump and dilute the rejected fraction. A gate valve 34 is provided at the bottom of the sump. The valves 26, 34 are operated through levers 36, 38 and links 40, 42 either manually or automatically in timed sequence by motors 44, 46. Other dimensions are given
