Abstract
1,220,118. Electropolishing zirconium. SIEMENS A.G. May 8, 1968 [May 10, 1967], No.21886/68. Heading C7B. A body of Zr or Zr alloy is anodically polished in an electrolyte comprising a mixture of perchloric, acetic and hydrochloric acids. Preferably the mixture comprises substantially pure acetic acid, 40% by volume perchloric acid and 37% by weight hydrochloric acid in the ratio 300 : 1 to 10 10 to 40 parts by volume, and may also include 10g. of chloracetic acid per 300 ml. of acetic acid. Typically the electrolyte is continuously circulated through an external cooling system to maintain the temperature below 25C., the polishing current density being in the range of 20 to 150 amps. /sq. dm. The body being polished may be a zirconium casing tube for a nuclear reactor and polishing may be effected with the use of cooled steel plate cathodes.
