Abstract

874,366. Electro-polishing metals. BRITISH IRON & STEEL RESEARCH ASSOCIATION. July 20, 1959 [Aug. 7, 1958], No. 25347/58. Class 41. Iron and steel surfaces are electro-polished before plating, e.g. with tin, using an electrolyte of pH 4 to 6 and containing ions of low diffusion coefficient, e.g. hydroxy carboxylic acids, to limit the current density for anode dissolution. Preferably, a solution of citric acid and sodium citrate with a little sodium chloride is used. Treatment is effected at 5‹ to 35‹ C. for a few seconds at a C.D. of 50/150 A.S.F.
