Abstract

1,220,104. Electric incandescent lamp. SYLVANIA ELECTRIC PRODUCTS Inc. 10 April, 1968 [20 April, 1967], No. 17366/68. Heading H1F. Trace amounts of alkali metal impurities are removed from a lamp by applying a negative D.C. potential (with respect to the filament) to a part of the lamp envelope from which the impurities will not escape into the fill gas during normal operation of the lamp, heating the lamp to at least 500‹ C. and attracting the impurities to the said part of the envelope. A metal clip 4 is disposed about part of the exhaust tube 2 of a lamp which has been outgassed, flushed and filled with halogen and inert gas. The clip 4 is attached to the negative terminal of D.C. supply 6 whilst one of the lead-in wires 7 is connected to the other supply terminal. When the filament 9 is energized trace quantities of Na, Li and K in the silica envelope 3 and the tungsten filament 9 or lead-in wires 7 are ionized and attracted into the exhaust tube. The process is continued until spectrometric analysis of the gas content of the lamp does not detect any alkali metal. The lamp is subsequently tipped off.
