Abstract

1,220,042. Sealing dry cells. UNION CARBIDE CORP. 9 Jan., 1969 [15 Jan., 1968], No. 1287/69. Heading H1B. A primary dry cell has an inner seal 26 extending between carbon rod 16 and electrode cup 10 defining a lower space 22 between seal 26 and depolarizer mix 12 and an upper space 24 between seal 26 and top closure 34 and a liquid and gas impermeable seal washer 28 covered with absorbent washer 32 in the upper space 24 over the turned in edge 30 of electrode 10, washer 28 being fitted round electrode 16 and sealed thereto by a sealing bead 46 underlying the washer and abutting against the non- corrodible liquid-impermeable jacket 36 which is locked in liquid-tight gas-permeable relation with closure 34, the space between the jacket 36, the turned in edge 30 and washer 28 being sealed by a bead seal 42 and another bead seal 44 underlies washer 28 sealing it to the inside of the turned in edge 30. Gas collecting in spaces 22, 24 is vented via carbon electrode 16 which is preferably waterproofed and the joint between closure 34 and jacket 36. Liquid leaking past seal 26 is stopped by seal 28 whilst liquid penetrating electrode 10 collects between it and jacket 36 but is prevented from reaching the joint between the jacket and closure 34 by bead seal 42. As described jacket 36 comprises an inner laminate of a liquid-impermeable plastics material and another thermoplastic material and an outer laminate of a thermoplastic material and three plies of cellulosic material, the two laminates being joined by heating to weld the two layers of thermoplastic material together.
