Abstract

1,219,892. Tandem wheel suspensions. J. D. CATTERALL, and R. A. S. MOSS. 11 April, 1968 [21 Jan., 1967; 4 Oct., 1967; 9 Oct., 1967], Nos. 3235/67, 45156/67 and 46044/67. Heading B7D. A tandem wheel suspension for a caravan or a motor vehicle comprises a pair of swinging arms pivotally connected to suspension mounting means, a pivoted balance beam interconnecting the swinging arms and coil spring means connected to the balance beam so as to allow spring movement of the swinging arms. In Fig. 2, the balance beam 25 is pivotally connected to a post 23 secured to one of transverse chassis members 12a, one of trailing arms 10 is connected to the balance beam through a coil spring 31 and a coaxial hydraulic damper 32, and the other trailing arm 10 is connected to the balance beam through a rod 29. In Fig. 4, the balance beam 49 is pivotally connected directly to one trailing arm 40 and through a shackle 47 to the other, and a coil spring 60 and damper 47 connect the balance beam to a gantry structure 54 on the chassis. In Fig. 5 (not shown), the balance beam is connected to both trailing arms through shackles.
