Abstract

1285047 Vehicle independent suspensions BAYERISCHE MOTOREN WERKE AG 20 Aug 1969 [20 Aug 1968] 41551/69 Headings B7D and B7H The steered wheel of a motor vehicle is suspended from the vehicle frame by upper and lower suspension linkages of which at least one is formed by a pair of mutually independent arms connected at separate points, e.g. by ball joints, to a stub-axle carrier and the vehicle frame. As shown in Fig. 6 an upper suspension member comprises a wishbone 11 having a ball-joint connection 12 to the stub-axle carrier 31, while the two lower suspension members form a pair of independent arms 50 connected at points 6<SP>1</SP> to the stub-axle carrier. The swivel axis of the wheel is thus the line 10<SP>1</SP>, connecting the ball-joint 12 to the point of intersection 9<SP>1</SP> of the axes 50<SP>1</SP> of arms 50. In another embodiment (Fig. 7, not shown) the two arms are connected to the upper part of the carrier, and the wishbone to the lower. As shown in Fig. 2, four arms are provided and arranged in pairs 4, 4 and 5, 5, the arms of each pair being coplanar and all the arms having a symmetrical disposition. In another embodiment (Figs. 8 and 9, not shown) four arms have an asymmetrical disposition, a spring and damping element (17) also being provided and pivotally connected to the carrier and frame, preferably the point of attachment (18) of this element to the frame lies on the effective swivel axis of the wheel. The asymmetrical disposition of the arms is said to counteract forward pitch of the vehicle during braking. As shown in Fig. 10, a spring strut 21 provides a linear guide arm for the wheel while two suspension members forming a pair of independent co-planar arms 22 have ball-joint connections 24 to the stub-axle carrier. In another embodiment (Fig. 13, not shown) similar to the embodiment just described, the two arms are non-co-planar. The swivel axes of two wheels on transversely opposite sides of the vehicle may be so inclined as to normally intersect either above or below the surface on which the vehicle stands.
