Abstract
1,219,541. Boots &c. N. H. MIDGLEY. 24 Jan., 1969 [26 Jan., 1968], No. 4185/69. Heading A3B. A shank stiffener 20 consists of a strip portion 24 having reinforcing flanges 26, 27 along each edge which are embedded in a shoe bottom component, e.g. the underside of the rear portion 22 of an insole. The shank stiffener 20 and the insole portion 22 are initially uncontoured in a lengthwise direction and are contoured e.g. by pressing between moulds, during or after attachment of the stiffener 20 to the insole 22. The strip portion 24 has a convex outer surface (Fig. 5) and a concave inner surface and the outer sides of the flanges 26, 27 are bevelled to provide sharp edges which can penetrate the material of the insole 22. The flanges 26, 27 may converge towards each other to provide a lock between the stiffener 20 and insole 22. Additional securing means such as staples 41 may be used. The stiffener 20 may be made from metal, e.g. mild steel, or plastics material.
