Abstract

1,219,459. Heating inductors. COMPAGNIE FRANCAISE THOMSON-HOUSTONHOTCHKISS BRANDT. 5 Sept., 1968 [5 Sept., 1967], No. 42364/68. Heading H5H. [Also in Division H1] The inductance of a variable, high-frequency, heating inductor is adjusted by rotation of the coil 1 about its axis A, a movable contact element 3 being provided, having a shape resembling a cylinder with rounded ends and supported so that one of its ends is in permanent contact, as at 5, with at least one turn of the coil and the other in contact, as at 6, with a conductive wall 2, to which one end of the coil is also connected. If the element is arranged to contact a single turn an insulating guide, e.g. a two-pronged fork, is affixed to it in order to hold it in engagement with the coil conductor. Alternatively the element may be arranged to run between two turns so as to contact both of them (Fig. 4, not shown). In a further embodiment two separate elements respectively contacting adjacent turns are provided. The or each element is pivoted with its axis approximately perpendicular to A in a U-shaped insulating plastics holder 7, the or both of which are supported by an articulated metal framework 10, 11, 14 pivoted at 15, 16 and provided with a counterbalance weight 24. The element is urged against the coil by a spring 25 and is preferably arranged so that the line joining the points of contact 5 and 6 is not radial with respect to the axis A (Fig. 2, not shown). Pellets of a metal having a good conductivity but low coefficient of friction, e.g. silver containing a small quantity of carbon, may be soldered to the element at the contact points. The element is cooled by passing a jet of compressed air through it. The coil conductor may be a copper tube, through which cooling fluid is circulated. If the coil is to be connected to a capacitor the wall 2 may be one of the metal plates of that capacitor. A common wall may be used for two coils connected together either in series or parallel.
