Abstract

[Also in Divisions F2 and G3] In a fuel injection timing device, the injection timing is directly responsive to engine speed and load as reflected by manifold pressure. An axially fixed rotating cam-shaft 12 is connnected to a drive gear 14 by a coupling 18, a part 19 of which extends into the shaft 12 and is keyed therein against relative rotation, a helical spline connection 22 connects gear 14 and coupling 18. A plunger 31 attached to coupling 18, is connected to a spring- loaded diaphragm cup 30 in chamber 28 such that increase in pressure in the manifold 24 transmitted via conduit 26 to chamber 28 moves coupling 18 towards the cam-shaft 12; such motion causes advancing of the fuel injection as the helical spline connection causes rotation of the shaft 12 with respect to gear 14. In another embodiment Fig. 3 manifold pressure entering via a conduit 26<SP>1</SP> moves a plunger 31<SP>1</SP> toward the cam-shaft and causes a groove 44 to simultaneously connect passages 45, 46, allowing pressurized oil from a line 47 to be fed into a chamber 46 thus causes the coupling 181 to move toward the cam-shaft and advance the timing.
