Abstract
1,218,122. Gas turbine combustion apparatus. MINISTER OF TECHNOLOGY. June 4, 1969 [June 10, 1968], No.27396/68. Heading F1L. A flame stabilizing device, e.g. for the reheat or bypass duct of a gas turbine engine, comprises a tube 4 of substantially circular cross-section with a protuberant trailing edge portion. When flame stabilization is not required, suction is applied to the interior of the tube 4 to act through holes 6 on the gas flow past the tube, thus resulting in minimum disturbance in the flow as shown in Fig. 3b. The suction is shut off when flame stabilization is required, resulting in a flow pattern as shown in Fig. 3a with recirculation zones. A fuel supply tube 3 is mounted upstream of the tube 4, the tubes being in alignment and supported by a common strut 1. The tubes 3, 4 may be striaght or may form an annular array, Fig. 1 (not shown). In the latter arrangement three sets of annular tubes 3, 4 are supported concentrically at different radii by means of three equi-angularly spaced radial struts 1, fuel being supplied to the tubes 3 through pipes. The trailing edges of the struts 1 may be shaped to define flame spreading zones.
