Abstract

1,184,683. Boundary layer control. MINISTER OF TECHNOLOGY. 1 Aug., 1968 [10 Aug., 1967], No. 36856/67. Heading F2R. [Also in Division F1] The distribution between primary and dilution air entering a gas turbine engine flame tube 2 can be controlled by applying suction through pipes 19, 18 and passages 16, 17 to annular slots 14, 15 in a flow divider 9 to draw off the boundary layer flow passing through a gap 13 between the divider 9 and the flame tube 2. The airflow through gap 13 to the combustion zone is thus increased and the dilution flow to space 6 decreased. In a modification, (not shown), the boundary layer can be drawn off through holes (27) in a hollow ring (26) mounted on a modified flow divider (21, 22) within the flame tube. In other modifications suction can be applied through holes, meshes, porous media or other openings, e.g. in the surfaces of guide vanes at the combustion chamber inlet. Valves may control the suction automatically in response to pressure, temperature, density, speed or fuel flow.
