Abstract

1,217,873. Tobacco smoke filters. MOLINS MACHINE CO. Ltd. and D. W. MOLINS. 22 May, 1969 [23 May, 1968], No. 24556/68. Heading A2C, Composite filter rod comprising alternate filter plugs 2 and granular material enclosed in a wrapper which is at least partly airpervious is strengthened by the provision of an outer wrapper. A suction box 11 over which the pervious wrapper 3 passes assists the delivery of the granular material from pockets 10 in a rotary wheel 9, and the outer wrapper 4 is introduced over a pulley 7. A subsequent station of the apparatus has a garniture tape 5 where the two wrappers are folded simultaneously or successively and overlapped and sealed to enclose the plugs and granular material. Alternatively, the inner wrapper may not be sealed, or the edges of the outer wrapper may be butted instead of overlapped, or the width of the outer wrapper may be insufficient for its edges to butt. The inner wrapper may be preperforated, or perforated in the apparatus before reaching the wheel 9 as in Specification 1,106,931, or it may consist of porous paper. The invention is applicable also to the production of individual lengths of composite filter rod as distinct from continuous rod.
