Abstract

An electromagnetic contactor or relay has a plunger armature type electromagnet secured to a contact unit with the plunger armature, when in its biased unattracted position, acting on a contact actuator to hold it against the bias of contact actuating springs which act on movable contacts engaged by the actuator. The electromagnet 10 has a yoke 15 with four outer limbs, e.g. 15a, 15b and a short fixed core 17 co-operating with the plunger armature 19 which is biased downward by a spring 18. The electromagnet 10 is held on to the base 22 of the contact unit 11 by a clip 61 fitting in grooves 71, 72, 73, 74 and below projections 75, 76 which also engage in apertures 81, 82 to retain a transparent cover 12. Partitions 25, 26 projecting from the base 22 divide the space above the base into 3 chambers 27, 31, 28 of which the outer ones are contact chambers each with two lower fixed contacts 42, 44 and two upper fixed contacts co-operating with a contact bridge 45 urged by a spring 46 toward the upper contact pair 41, 43. The contact actuator 51 is slidable in a transverse slot 36 and engages the contact bridges 45 so that the armature spring 18 acting on the armature 19 urges it against the actuator 51 which holds the contact bridges 45 in engagement with the lower contacts 42, 44 against the bias of springs 46. When the coil 14 is energized the armature moves upward and permits the springs 46 to move the contact bridges 45 to the upper positions. Fig. 10 shows an alternative contact actuator having bifurcated ends 51a, 51b, 51c, 51d providing even contact pressure. The relay may be mounted on a panel by means of a spring mounting member (Figs. 7, 8, 9, not shown) with a tongue fitting a recess in the base 22 and over projections of the cover 12.
