Abstract

An electromagnetic contactor has auxiliary contacts which are operated through a cam device responsive to movement of a main contact carrier. A box-shaped insulating housing 10 receives the movable contact assembly 11 and is closed by a cover 12 which supports two rows of fixed contacts 30 for co-operation with contact bridges 25 on a contact carrier 20 of the assembly 11. The carrier 20 is secured to the armature 22 of an electromagnet 18, 47 and has legs 21 slidable in guideways 28 of the housing 10. Springs 50 compressed between the cover 12 and arm 53 on the carrier 20 bias the armature and contact carrier to the deenergized position in which cam slots 55 in protuberances of the carrier retain pins 59 on surfaces 71 thereof. When the coil 18 is energized to attract the armature 22 and close main contacts 25, 30 the inclined faces of the slots 55 move the pins 59 to the Fig. 5 position. Each pin 59 projects from an auxiliary contact unit 58 in a transparent insulating casing 70 which has six fixed contacts 76 and up to three contact bridges 85 in a slide 88 from which the pin 59 extends. The fixed contacts 76 have bent terminal ends outside the casing 70 which may be reversed to charge the auxiliary contact arrangement. In the extreme positions of the armature and contact carrier 20, the pins 59 lie in parts 71, 72 of the slots 55 in which the sides are parallel to the direction of movement of the contact carrier so that there is no resultant force on the carrier in these positions.
