Compounds of the general formula (R,R<SP>1</SP> = H, C 1-5 alkyl, aryl, aralkyl; R<SP>2,3</SP> = OH, alkyl, alkoxy; R<SP>4</SP> = H, Me, Pr<SP>i</SP>, But) and their salts are prepared by catalytically hydrogenating a compound of the formula (R<SP>2,3</SP> = OH, alkyl, alkoxy, OCH 2 Ph; R<SP>5</SP> = Me, Pr<SP>i</SP>, Bu<SP>t</SP>, CH 2 Ph) in a chlorinated organic solvent, optionally followed by condensation with acetone under reducing conditions (when R<SP>5</SP> = CH 2 Ph) and/or salt formation. The preparation of the starting materials by the van Dyk and Moed reaction (R=H) or Grignard reaction (R = substituent) is described.
