1433595 Alkanolamines IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 15 June 1973 [6 July 1972] 31692/72 Heading C2C [Also in Division A5] Compounds of the general formula (R<SP>1</SP>=alkyl, hydroxyalkyl, cycloalkyl; R<SP>2,3</SP>= H, alkyl; R<SP>4</SP>=H, OH, halogen, alkyl, alkenyl, alkylthio, alkoxy, alkenyloxy; organic radicals contain up to six carbon atoms) and their salts are prepared by standard methods, for example by reacting the corresponding phenoxymethyloxirane or w-chloro-phenoxyisopropanol with R<SP>1</SP>NH 2 , optionally followed by resolution and/or salt formation. The preparation of phenols corresponding to the above formulabut in which the alkanolamine side chain is replaced by a hydroxy group, and of 1-0-hydroxyphenylpent-1-ene-2- carboxylic acid and its methyl ester is described.
