Abstract

1,216,328. Coating metal strip with oil. STEEL CO. of WALES Ltd. 14 Nov., 1968 [20 Nov., 1967], No. 52694/67. Heading B2E. [Also in Division D1] Prior to coiling, a metal strip is coated with oil and passed through a transverselyextended gas stream which impinges on the oil surface to control the coating thickness. The gas stream may be applied perpendicular to the strip or at an angle of up to 30‹ to this, having a component countercurrent to the direction of motion of the strip. As shown, metal strip 10 is passed through an oil bath 19, and the coating is smoothed by means of gas knives 15 before coiling on a coiler 17. In a modification, the oil may be dipped or sprayed onto the upper surface of the strip, one gas knife employed and the other surface coated by contact with the adjacent wrap when coiled. The strip speed is variable from 25-200 ft./min. The air pressure in the knife is variable between 20 and 60 p.s.i., the width of the nozzle between 0.005 and 0.025 inches, and its distance from the strip between 1/8 and 5/8 inch.
