Abstract

The thickness of coating on hot dip coated strip is controlled by projecting gaseous streams against opposite surfaces of the strip from nozzles positioned on either side thereof in such manner that the impingement heights of the gas streams on the strip overlap and are offset from each other by an amount of from 1/ 20 to of the impingement height, the gas streams extending beyond the width of the strip. It is stated that such arrangement eliminates the formation of built-up ridges of coating material at the edges of the strip. The coating metals may be Al, Zn, Sn or Pb. Vertically moving steel strip leaving a hot dip bath passes between air nozzles 10a, 10b, the nozzles being so positioned that the impingement heights H of the air streams are offset by an amount X of from 1/ 20 to of this height H. Each nozzle comprises a heading 12, a convergent throat 14 an orifice 16 having lips 221, 2211. Lip 221 is adjustably fixed to throat 14 by bolts 26a for varying this height S of the nozzle aperture. A screen 20 is provided in throat 14. These nozzles may be tilted between an angle of 20 degrees above the horizontal to an angle of 45 degrees below the horizontal, and are positioned between inch and 1 inches from the strip. The nozzles are disposed about 6 inches above the surface of the bath. An alternative form of nozzle is described, having replaceable lips, the thickness of which determines this aperture height S.
