Abstract

1,216,321. Rotary actuators; reciprocating actuators. AUDCO Ltd. Jan.24, 1968 [Jan. 24, 1967], No.3893/67. Headings F1A and F1F. A fluid-operated actuator comprises a cylindrical casing 1, Fig.1, provided with a cylindrical hub 2 connected by a radial web 3 to the casing wall and on opposite sides of the web expansible envelopes 4, 5 which are selectively connectible to a source of pressure fluid and exhaust. Angularly movable on the side of the hub opposite to the web is a roller 6 carried on the outer end of an arm 7 which projects through a hub slot and is secured to a shaft 8 pivoted on the hub axis. Flexible tapes 9, 10 extend most of the way round the respective envelopes 4, 5 and are anchored at their ends 11..14 to the hub and casing adjacent the web. In operation, pressurization of one envelope will cause it to expand and tension the tape therearound which will pull the roller and arm towards the pressurized envelope to rotates the shaft 8 whilst the other tape will act on the surface of the other envelope to expel fluid therefrom. In another embodiment, the envelopes 4, 5 are staggered along the axis of the shaft 8 and separate rollers are carried by a common arm so that the envelopes occupy a greater portion of the space and thus provide an angular movement of 180 degrees for the lever arm.
