Abstract

1,216,279. Timing devices. UNION TANK CAR CO. Nov.1, 1968 [Nov.1, 1967], No.51818. Heading G3T. A timing device for actuating a mechanism, such as the valves in a water softening system, at a predetermined time comprises a motor 25 adapted to rotate a timer dial (130), Fig.3 (not shown) and a pinion 35, a gear assembly 50 operatively connected to the mechanizm and including a ring gear 57 having a cut away portion 59, an arm 90 for initially rotating the ring gear to cause the ring gear to mesh with the pinion and pins 85 on the timer dial for causing the arm to initially rotate the ring gear. Two gear systems (not shown) in a gear box 20 transmit a drive from the output pinion 26 of the synchronous electric motor 25 to a shaft 30 to rotate the timer dial at one revolution per week and to the pinion 35 to rotate this pinion at one revolution per fifteen minutes. A locking cap 78 is screwed on to the threaded end 77 of the shaft 30 and secures a disc 74, attached to the dial, to the shaft. The ring gear 57 is mounted on a shaft 51 connected to a shaft 11 on which are positioned cams for operating the valves. To set the timing device to cause actuation of the valves at a particular time on a particular day, the appropriate one of the seven pins 85 corresponding to each day of the week is pressed inwardly and the dial (130) is rotated until the selected time on the dial plate, which is marked with fourteen sets of 3, 6, 9 and 12 hour indications, is aligned with the centre of the selected pin. The cap 78 is then loosened and the disc 74 rotated with the dial (130), which has been tightened onto the disc, until the existing time coincides with an arrow 139 on the face plate 140. After tightening the cap, the disc 74 is rotated by the motor until the pre-selected time is reached whereupon the depressed pin engages a finger 101 of the arm 90, which is mounted on a plate 31 and biased by a spring 98, to push the arm sideways. An abutment 103 on the arm engages an abutment 105 on a flange 60 of the ring gear to rotate the ring gear so that the pinion 35 meshes with teeth 110 of a tooth arm 111. The arm 111 transfers the pinion into mesh with teeth 58 of the ring gear which is thus rotated to actuate the valves for a period of time until the ring gear has been rotated to such a position that the cut away portion 59 is adjacent the pinion.
