Abstract
121,605. Mougeotte, G. Dec. 17, 1917, [Convention date]. Valves.-Cylinders are disposed radially in a number of substantially parallel planes each containing an even number of cylinders, the distribution being controlled by rotary valves located between the heads of cylinders disposed in adjacent radial planes. Fig. 1 shows one of the parallel planes of an engine having sixteen cylinders. Rotary cylindrical valves x<1> each control the cylinders in a pair of planes radial to the crank-shaft. Each valve has a pair of inlet ports o and a pair of exhaust ports g; the inlet ports communicate with annular passages x and the exhaust ports with central chambers z. Cooling water is circulated through the chambers y. The valves are packed with rings (not shown) and with strips e disposed parallel to the axes of the valves. The packing is held in contact with the valves by the pressure of the lubricating oil which acts upon the faces of the packing remote from the valves. Lubricating oil for the valve mechanism is supplied by a pump having its inlet orifice located above that of a pump which lubricates other parts of the engine. In the event of the oil in the supply tank b running out, the pump supplying the valve mechanism is cut out before the other pump. The packing-members are thus relieved of pressure and seizing of the valves is prevented. A valve-controlled by-pass is located in the lubricating-oil system and the spring of the valve is connected to a valve in the carburettor so that the pressure of the lubricating oil varies with the quantity of charge delivered to the engine.
