Abstract
1,215,739. Alkali metal hypoph03phite; phosphine. NIPPON CHEMICAL INDUSTRIAL CO. Ltd. 10 July, 1968 [10 July, 1967], No. 32938/68. Heading C1A. An alkali metal hypophosphite and phosphine are produced by the addition of an alkali metal hydroxide to an aqueous dispersion of P in the presence of a finely divided material insoluble in water, and an aqueous alkaline solution, at a temperature above the m.pt, of P. The finely divided material can be an alkaline earth metal salt; an oxide of a metal of Group II, Group III or Group IV, e.g. Ti, Al, Mg, Si; clays such as kaolin, bentonite or talc; activated C; or cellulosic pulp. P and the additive material are introduced into a reactor which contains water above the m.pt. of P, preferably higher than 70‹ C.; the reaction starts immediately and PH3 is evolved. When P compounds are produced as by-products, Ca(OH) 2 or Ca(H 2 PO 2 ) may be added to control the side-reactions, which compounds may be added before or after the reaction. Ca remaining in the reaction mix can be removed by treatment with C0 2 , oxalic acid or one of its salts.
