Abstract

[Also in Division B3] In a system for continuously rolling wire rod by passing it in succession through a roughing roll train, an intermediate looping roll train, and a finishing roll train in which alternate horizontal and vertical rolls are divided into two separately driven groups, deviations of width of the finished stock automatically control the speed of one group and deviations of width and thickness of stock entering the finishing train automatically control the speed of one finishing train group and a roll gap in the intermediate train respectively. As shown, rod W, after rough rolling, passes through intermediate rolls 1 and 2 to alternate horizontal and vertical finishing rolls 11 arranged in two groups separately driven at 12 and 13. The thickness of the rod, measured between the intermediate and finishing rolls at 15a and at a final output position 16a, respectively control roll gap regulators 6 and 14 for rolls 2 and X so that thickness variations are corrected automatically. The widths of the rod, measured at 15b, 16b, control the relative speed of drive 12 to the first group of finishing rolls so that variations in width are also corrected automatically. The automatic corrections are superposed on programme control P of roll gap and relative speed, and loop detectors 8 and 9 are also provided for automatic tension control.
