Abstract
1,214,049. Drying slurries. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 9 Oct., 1969 [18 Oct., 1968], No. 49476/68. Heading F4G. A band drier is fitted with slurry streaking means at the feed end of the drier before entry to the heating section 5 of the drier, said streaking means being employed to impose a pattern on the wet slurry so as to wholly subdivide the wet slurry into a plurality of discrete sections which are removable as separate dried sheets or strips from the discharge end of the drier, or to partially subdivide the wet slurry into a plurality of weakly connected sections which are readily separable at the discharge end of the drier. The said streaking means take the form of a first set of lateral streaking members 14 mounted for reciprocating motion across the drier for effecting lateral streaks at spaced intervals across the width of the wet slurry, and a second set of longitudinal streaking members 9 and 8 for effecting longitudinal streaks along the length of the wet slurry. The lateral and longitudinal streaking members are of such length as to either completely subdivide the slurry for its entire depth without damaging the band of the drier, or to effect depressions in the slurry which produce tear lines in the dried sheet. The lateral streaking members are soft tipped elongated finger members mounted at spaced intervals on a driven endless belt disposed across the drier. The longitudinal streaking members are similar and mounted at spaced intervals on the hopper fulcrum bar 7 so as to be raisable and lowerable with the feed hopper 2 of the drier, positioned between the entry to the oven section of the drier and the point of application of the slurry to the band of the drier. The longitudinal streaking members may be mounted so as to subdivide the slurry before it leaves the reverse roll coater 3 from which the slurry is applied to the band of the drier 1, or the slurry division may be achieved using a driven embossed roller mounted across the width of the drier in such a manner as to impose a pattern on the slurry.
