Abstract

1,213,650. Electromagnetic couplings. MITSUBISHI DENKI K.K. 30 Nov., 1967 [30 Nov., 1966; 28 Feb., 1967], No. 54579/67. Heading H2A. In a coupling comprising relatively rotatable coupling members 18, 36 having opposed cylindrical surfaces separated by an annular gap, an annular coolant channel 54 is located just under the working surface 36a of the member 36, the coolant, e.g. water or oil, being respectively supplied and exhausted through passages 60, 64 extending axially through a shaft 42 coupled to the member 36, and substantially parallel radially extending passageways 56, 58. The latter communicate with the annular channel 54 on opposite sides of a partition 90, Fig. 2, inserted therein. Inlet and exhaust coolant chambers 76, 78 defined by the shaft 42, a surrounding sleeve 72, sealing members 72, 74 and an annular, partition 80, respectively communicate with inlet and outlet ports 62 and 66, 68 which in turn communicate with the passages 60, 64. The coupling may operate as a clutch or brake and in the embodiment disclosed is of the type having magnetic powder in the air gap between the coupling members, the powder being energized by a stationary coil 14.
