121,361. Tebbutt, J. T. Dec. 17, 917. Connecting uppers to insoles and soles.-To reinforce a welted boot or shoe, a number of tie-straps 10, Fig. 1, are arranged across the underside of the insole. These tiestraps extend over the lining 6, Fig. 2, and the insole flange 2, which is formed by slitting the edge of the insole to form a lip 3 and cutting the body of the insole to form a lip 4, and are secured by a seam 8 passing through the upper 7, lining, tiestraps, and flange 2. A second seam 8<a> passing through these parts secures the welt 5 in position, and after applying a filling 12 of asbestos, an outer sole is attached in the usual way. In a modified construction, the insole is made of felt with a top covering of asbestos and then a facing of thin leather, which is brought under the margin of the insole to cover the flange 2. The insole, covering, facing, filling, tie-straps, and welt may be treated with an antiseptic, such as eucalyptus compound.
